As much as I love decorating for every season, reality looks a little different these days.
Between a family of five, a golden retriever who somehow sheds in every season, and living in a modest ranch-style home, storage space is something we don't have much of. A few years ago, I added two shelving units to our basement laundry room just to keep my seasonal decor organized, and even those are starting to fill up.
With Christmas in July right around the corner, I've been thinking about decorating a little smarter. Instead of buying pieces that only work for one holiday, I've been focusing on affordable home decor that stays out year-round and simply changes with the seasons.
Not only does it save precious storage space for the decorations I truly love, but it also saves something that's even harder to find these days... time. With three kids involved in sports, quick seasonal refreshes are much more realistic than completely redecorating every few months.
These are the five decorating staples I reach for again and again.
1. Lanterns
If I could only keep one decorating accessory year-round, it would probably be lanterns.
They're incredibly versatile because you rarely need to change the lantern itself... just what's inside or around it.
- Spring: Faux tulips, moss balls, bird nests, or fairy lights.
- Summer: Battery candles, lemons, seashells, or greenery.
- Fall: Mini pumpkins, pinecones, acorns, or amber candles.
- Winter: Evergreen sprigs, ornaments, bells, or snowy branches.
A quality lantern becomes the foundation, while a few inexpensive seasonal accents completely transform the look.
I'm loving these Indoor/Outdoor Scalloped Metal Lanterns, Set of 2 right now!

2. Indoor Pots and Planters
Plants already bring life to a room, but beautiful planters can completely change the personality of your space throughout the year.
I love keeping a collection of neutral ceramic or terracotta pots that work no matter the season.
During spring, they hold fresh herbs or flowering plants. Summer calls for ferns or citronella plants on the porch. In fall, I swap in mums or dried grasses. Winter is perfect for small evergreens or faux cedar stems.
The planter never changes... only what's growing inside it or was is tied around it.
Here's a few planters you can't go wrong with:

3. Glass Hurricanes
Glass hurricanes are one of the most underrated decorating pieces.
They're simple, timeless, and can become almost anything.
Fill them with:
- lemons or limes in summer
- pinecones in fall
- ornaments at Christmas
- moss and eggs in spring
- candles any time of year
Because the glass itself is neutral, you can completely reinvent it in just a few minutes.

4. Wooden Dough Bowls or Decorative Trays
This is one of those pieces that never leaves my coffee table.
A wooden dough bowl, tray, or riser instantly creates a finished look while giving you a place to layer seasonal accents.
Throughout the year you might style it with:
- candles and greenery
- fresh fruit
- pumpkins
- ornaments
- pinecones
- florals
- decorative beads
- small figurines
Instead of redecorating an entire room, simply restyling one tray can make your whole home feel ready for the next season.

5. Neutral Candle Holders
Candles always make a home feel cozy, but it's really the candle holders that earn permanent shelf space.
Whether you love brass, black metal, distressed wood, or antique-inspired finishes, a neutral set works beautifully all year.
Simply switch out the candle colors:
- Soft pastels for spring
- Crisp whites or citronella candles for summer
- Rich amber and rust tones for fall
- Deep reds, forest greens, or ivory for Christmas
It's one of the easiest seasonal updates you can make in less than a minute.
The Sculptural Wavy Distressed Gold Metal Taper Candleholders, Set of 3 are a really unique shape! I also love that they come with three different sizes.
Decorating Smarter Means Decorating Longer
I've realized I don't need a completely different home every season.
Instead, I invest in timeless, versatile pieces that work all year long and let the smaller accents do the seasonal heavy lifting.
It's better for my storage room, easier on my schedule, and honestly better for my budget too.
That's one of the reasons I love shopping for affordable home decor that's designed to last beyond a single holiday. At Decor Steals, we believe beautiful homes shouldn't come with huge markups. Our commitment to honest pricing means you can invest in quality pieces you'll use season after season (not just for a few weeks each year).
Sometimes the smartest decorating isn't buying more.
It's choosing pieces that can do more.
