Last week here in Wisconsin we got a little taste of spring. The snow melted, the sun was shining, and for a brief moment it felt like winter might finally be over. Of course, as I sit here typing this… we are currently in the middle of a full-on blizzard. For real.
But that tiny glimpse of spring was enough to get my wheels turning and my excitement building about styling the outdoor spaces at our new-to-us house.
Since moving in, we’ve spent the past summer, fall, and winter focusing almost entirely on the interior of the house. The outdoor spaces have been mostly ignored. But as soon as the weather hinted that warmer days are coming, I started dreaming about cozy porches, glowing lanterns, and little garden details that make a yard feel welcoming.
One of my favorite decorating tricks indoors is layering decor, and the same concept works beautifully outside, too. When you think about outdoor spaces the same way you style a living room (with layers of furniture, lighting, accents, and vertical elements) everything suddenly feels more intentional and inviting.
Today I’m sharing the secret to layered outdoor decor, and how you can build a beautiful (and affordable) outdoor space step by step.
Start with the Base Layer: Furniture + Rugs
Just like inside your home, every outdoor space needs a strong foundation. This is your base layer, the pieces that define the space and make it comfortable to spend time in.
A cozy seating area instantly makes a porch or patio feel inviting. A Cushioned Porch Lattice Rocking Chair is the perfect place to sip morning coffee or unwind in the evening. Rocking chairs always add a touch of classic charm to a porch.
To ground the space, add a rug like the Ornate Distressed Outdoor Rug. Outdoor rugs help define the seating area and bring texture and warmth to the space. They also make the entire setup feel more like an extension of your home rather than just patio furniture sitting outside.
Think of these pieces as your outdoor “living room.”

Add the Mid Layer: Lighting
Once your base layer is set, lighting adds warmth and atmosphere. Outdoor lighting is one of the easiest ways to make your space feel magical, especially in the evenings.
Lanterns are one of my favorite ways to create that cozy glow. The Solar Powered Antique Gold Iron Outdoor Lantern with Hummingbird Detail adds beautiful character during the day and soft lighting at night.

For a little seasonal charm, the Interchange-a-glow Series Light Pillars are so fun! You can switch the sleeves depending on the look you want:
They’re a simple way to add personality to a porch or patio.

Grouping lanterns together also creates a layered lighting effect. Pieces like the Perforated Iron Metal Lanterns (Set of Three) or the Modern Glass Panel Outdoor Lantern look beautiful styled on porch steps, outdoor tables, or beside seating areas.

For something rustic and charming, the Rustic Chamber Solar Lantern gives off a warm glow and adds that cozy farmhouse or cottagecore feel.
Lighting is what really brings an outdoor space to life once the sun sets. Bonus points if it’s solar-powered, so it lights up automatically without you having to turn it on.
The Accent Layer: Garden Decor
Now for the fun part… the decorative accents that bring personality and charm to your yard.
Little garden details make a space feel whimsical and welcoming. The 12 Inch Iron Handmade Mushroom Garden Decor (Set of 5) adds a playful woodland vibe tucked into garden beds or along walkways.

Another eye-catching option is the Outdoor Freestanding Metal Flowers (Set of Five). These add height, color, and interest even before your real flowers start blooming. They also double as cute centerpieces!

If you love a rustic garden feel, the Rustic Mushroom Silhouette Garden Cutout looks adorable nestled among plants.
You can also add a personal touch with the Find Me In The Garden Custom Sign, which makes the space feel truly yours.
And if you love seasonal decorating, Endless Summer: The Seasonal Collection by Steal It Box is packed with 6 summer pieces (including a tranquil fountain) that make styling your outdoor space easy.

These accents are like the throw pillows and decorative objects of your outdoor space. Small details that make everything feel complete.
The Vertical Layer: Trellises & Garden Structures
One layer people often forget outdoors is vertical decor. Adding height draws the eye upward and makes a yard feel fuller and more designed.
Garden trellises are perfect for this. The Fleur de Lis Metal Garden Trellis (Set of Three) adds beautiful structure to garden beds while giving climbing plants something to grow on.

The Scrollwork Trellis Distressed Copper Wall Planter (Set of 3) is another beautiful option for adding greenery to fences or exterior walls.

If you love displaying plants or decor at different heights, the Enchanted Circle Multi-Level Garden Display Stand is perfect for layering pots, lanterns, or seasonal pieces.
Vertical elements help balance your outdoor space and create visual interest from every angle.
Bringing It All Together
Layered outdoor decor works the same way layered interior design does.
Start with your foundation pieces, then build up with lighting, accents, and vertical elements.
When all the layers come together, your outdoor space transforms into a cozy extension of your home… a place where you actually want to sit, relax, and enjoy the fresh air.
And once this Wisconsin blizzard finally passes, you can bet I’ll be outside figuring out exactly how I want to style our new outdoor spaces.
Until then… I’ll just keep dreaming about spring.
