The Peggy Martin Rose: A Beautiful Story of Survival for Your Garden

The Peggy Martin Rose: A Beautiful Story of Survival for Your Garden

I’ve always loved decorating my home with pieces that have a story behind them. Whether it’s vintage-inspired decor, meaningful heirlooms, or pieces that spark conversation, those are the items that make a space feel personal. But it’s not just my home decor that tells a story; I love it when my plants do, too.

The Peggy Martin Rose is one of those plants that completely captures the heart. It’s not just a stunning climbing rose with gorgeous pink blooms; it’s a rose with a powerful history of resilience, survival, and hope.

If you’re looking for a rose that adds beauty, history, and charm to your garden, this one does not disappoint.

In this post we’ll cover:

  • The incredible story behind the Peggy Martin Rose

  • Where to plant it on your property

  • How to showcase it with a garden arch or trellis

  • Outdoor decor ideas to complement your garden space

What Makes the Peggy Martin Rose a Symbol of Survival?

The Peggy Martin Rose carries one of the most remarkable stories in the gardening world.

Peggy Martin now lives in Gonzales, Louisiana, but the rose that bears her name began growing at her original homestead in Phoenix, Louisiana in Plaquemines Parish. In 1989, Peggy planted a cutting she had received from a friend in the famous New Orleans Garden District.

At the time, it was simply an unnamed rose among Peggy’s impressive garden collection. Her garden held over 1,000 plants, including 450 antique roses, and this climbing rose was just one of them.

Then in 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the region.

Peggy’s property was submerged under 30 feet of water for two weeks. When she finally returned to her home, everything was gone. Her house, garden, and belongings had all been destroyed. Tragically, Peggy also lost her parents, who had chosen not to evacuate.

The entire property was blackened and lifeless.

Except for one thing.

Near Peggy’s tractor shed, there was a hint of green — the place where her climbing rose had once grown.

Somehow, against all odds, the rose had survived the floodwaters.

Where Did the Peggy Martin Rose Originally Come From?

For years, Peggy had tried to identify the rose.

She sent samples to rose breeders and experts across the country, even as far away as India and Australia. No one could definitively determine its origin.

There are stories in New Orleans of this rose growing on plantations and historic properties, passed down through generations.

Peggy’s best theory is that the rose dates back to the 1800s, when roses were often ordered from France, since New Orleans had very few nurseries at the time.

Its exact origins remain a mystery… which only adds to its charm.

How Did the Peggy Martin Rose Help Rebuild After Hurricane Katrina?

After Hurricane Katrina, Peggy received a call from William Welch, a horticulturist from Texas A&M University and a longtime friend. He had an idea. What if they named the rose after Peggy and used it to raise money for hurricane recovery? Peggy agreed.

The Peggy Martin Rose was introduced and quickly became known as “The Rose of Survival.” Proceeds from the rose helped support the Garden Club of America’s national restoration effort, which worked to restore historic gardens in:

  • New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Biloxi, Mississippi

  • Beaumont, Texas

Today, the rose continues to thrive in gardens across the country.

Peggy once shared:

“I get so tickled because every year, it just blows up Facebook. Everybody wants to put pictures of their Peggy Martin Rose,” Martin said. “A nursery owner told me they can’t keep it in stock. They’ll get 3,000 in, and in three weeks, they’re all gone.”

Where Should You Plant a Peggy Martin Rose in Your Garden?

One of the best things about the Peggy Martin Rose is that it’s incredibly vigorous and easy to grow.

It’s a climbing rose, which means it loves space to stretch and climb. When choosing where to plant it on your property, consider areas where it can become a focal point.

Great places to plant it include:

  • At the entrance to your garden

  • Along a fence line

  • Near a patio or outdoor seating area

  • Beside a garden shed, arbor or trellis

  • Framing a pathway

Because the plant grows quickly and produces long climbing canes, it looks especially beautiful when trained upward.

How Can You Use a Garden Arch Trellis to Showcase a Peggy Martin Rose?

One of my favorite ways to showcase this rose is with a garden arch trellis. Our 8 Foot Tall Metal Outdoor Garden Arch Trellis with 6 Plant Shelves is perfect for letting climbing roses like the Peggy Martin Rose take center stage. Not only does it give the rose a beautiful structure to climb, but it also creates a stunning garden feature.

Ways to style the arch:

  • Plant a Peggy Martin Rose at the base so the vines climb over the top

  • Use the six shelves to display small potted plants or trailing greenery

  • Add lanterns or garden accents to create a cozy outdoor moment

  • Place the arch over a pathway to create a romantic garden entrance

As the rose grows, it will eventually cascade across the arch, creating a breathtaking canopy of pink blooms each spring.
