Yaya's Apple Crisp
“My brother and I were the youngest grandkids for a while. Our Yaya loved baking and taught my mom all her secrets. My fathers family is Irish, my mother's family is Italian. But it was all about love and food/cooking together. We would make the apple crisp together, but our favorite part was using the leftovers to make "rolly pollies" you would take the leftover dough and fill it with sugar and spices and roll it into what looked like a cannoli and then bake. My best memories are baking with Yaya and Mom, priceless.” Stacey, Senior Buyer

For the Pups
Pumpkin Dog Biscuits
“This recipe came from my mom one autumn when we were looking for a way to do something kind for our neighbor and her dogs. Needless to say, her dogs woofed them down!” - Jana, Buyer
Ingredients (makes approximately 75 small (1″) biscuits or 50 medium biscuits):
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 2 tablespoons dry milk
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 2-1/2 cups brown rice flour *
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
Note: Brown rice flour gives the biscuits crunch and promotes better dog digestion. Many dogs have touchy stomachs or allergies, and do not, like many people I know, tolerate wheat. For any dietary concerns, please consult your veterinarian.
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and pumpkin until smooth. Stir in dry milk, sea salt, and parsley (if using).
- Gradually add brown rice flour, mixing with a spatula or your hands until a stiff, dry dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead briefly if needed to bring it together.
- Roll dough to ¼–½ inch thickness, depending on your dog’s chew preference. Cut into shapes using a cookie cutter, re-rolling scraps as needed.
- Arrange biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. (Optional: Press a fork pattern on top of each biscuit.)
- Bake for 20 minutes, flip the biscuits, then bake for an additional 20 minutes.
- Cool completely on a rack before serving to your pup.
- biscuit shaped cookie cutter to punch shapes, gathering and re-rolling scraps as you go.
- Place shapes on cookie sheet, no greasing or paper necessary. If desired, press fork pattern on biscuits before baking, a quick up-and-down movement with fork, lightly pressing down halfway through dough.
- Bake for 20 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and carefully turn biscuits over, then bake for an additional 20 minutes.
- Allow to cool completely on the rack before feeding the dog.
