My Kids Picked the Decor... And Honestly, They Had Great Taste

My Kids Picked the Decor... And Honestly, They Had Great Taste

When we bought our "new-to-us" 1960s home in December 2024, we knew we were taking on a big project. We gutted the house, removed walls, completely remodeled it, and finally moved in during late October 2025... as soon as the inspector gave us the green light. It wasn't completely finished (far from it!), but it was finally home.

Fast forward to July 2026, and we're finally at the point where most of the interior renovations are complete. Now comes my favorite part: making our house feel like our home.

Lately I've been focusing on our kids' bedrooms. It's been so much fun watching their personalities come through as we add finishing touches that reflect who they are.

So I had a fun idea.

Instead of choosing everything myself, I sat each of the kids down and let them browse Decor Steals to see what they would pick for their own rooms. I asked them one simple question:

"If you could choose anything for your room, what would it be and how would you use it?"

Their answers were creative, practical, and honestly gave me a few decorating ideas I never would have thought of myself.

Here's what they picked!

What Did My Youngest Daughter Choose?

My youngest has always been my girly girl. For years everything had to be pink and purple, but recently she's declared that blue and teal are her new favorite colors. She still loves dress-up, makeup, unicorns, and anything whimsical, so her picks were the perfect mix of pretty and practical.

Scalloped Floating Shelves, Set of 2

These were her very first pick.

She immediately said she'd use them to display some of her favorite books, her unicorn nightlight, and a few little treasures she's collected over the years. I loved that she wasn't thinking about simply decorating, she was imagining a little space that felt uniquely hers.

Solar Powered Antique Gold Iron Outdoor Lantern

This one surprised me!

She wants to hang it in her bedroom and use it as a nightlight. I never would have considered bringing an outdoor lantern indoors, but she instantly pictured the soft glow making bedtime feel a little more magical.

Sometimes kids really do think outside the box.

Expandable Round Rolling Accent Table (30")

If there's one thing she loves almost as much as dress-up, it's crafting.

The moment she saw this rolling cart, she said she'd fill it with markers, colored pencils, paint, stickers, and all of her craft supplies so she could wheel it wherever she wanted to create.

Honestly...that's a pretty brilliant idea.

What Did My Sports-Loving Son Pick?

My middle kiddo is all about sports.

Baseball. Basketball. Soccer. If he's awake, chances are he's throwing, kicking, or bouncing something.

His choice made complete sense.

Before and After

He immediately imagined using each basket for different sports gear.

Basketballs for the mini hoop in his bedroom.

Baseballs and gloves.

Soccer gear.

Instead of everything ending up scattered across the floor (a mom can dream!), he'd have one place to keep it all organized, and because it's on wheels, he could easily move it around whenever he needed it.

As someone who's constantly reminding kids to pick things up, I fully support this plan.

Which Pieces Caught My Oldest Daughter's Eye?

My oldest has always had an eye for organization.

She's definitely more of a tomboy with a feminine flair. She loves blues, greens, and teals, enjoys sports, and somehow genuinely likes cleaning and organizing. (Not going to lie...that may have come from me!)

Her selections were probably the least surprising to me.

The second she saw these baskets she said,

"Those would make organizing so much easier."

I completely understood why she picked them.

They're perfect for corralling books, keepsakes, extra blankets, craft supplies, or all those little things that somehow end up covering every surface in a kid's room.

Faux Hanging Vine with Variegated Green and Purple Leaves

She absolutely loves plants and greenery. The only problem? Remembering to water them.

This faux hanging vine gives her all the cozy, natural feel she loves without needing any maintenance. It's an easy way to bring color and texture into her room while fitting perfectly with her favorite blue and green color palette.

Botanical Leaf Wall Sconces with LED Lights, Set of 2

Every night before bed, our kids spend about 15–30 minutes reading.

As soon as she saw these cordless sconces, she pictured hanging them above her bed to create the perfect reading nook.

I have to admit...I kind of wanted them for my room too.

What Did This Little Experiment Teach Me?

One of my favorite parts about decorating is that there really aren't many rules.

As adults, we sometimes get caught up thinking about what a product is supposed to be used for. Kids don't think that way. An outdoor lantern becomes a magical bedroom nightlight. A rolling accent table becomes the ultimate craft station. Storage baskets become organization headquarters.

Looking through Decor Steals with my kids reminded me that decorating should be fun, personal, and a reflection of the people who live in the space.

Sometimes the best decorating ideas come from seeing your home through someone else's eyes... especially your kids'.
