We’ve all been there: Valentine’s Day morning is approaching, and you want to create a magical "Pinterest-worthy" moment for your kids or spouse. You want something that looks grand and thoughtful, but let's be honest, traditional gift baskets can feel a little flat, and expensive floral arrangements wilt in a week.
The solution? The DIY Valentine’s Day Basket Swing. This whimsical, elevated gift basket creates an enchanting scene that will make their eyes light up the second they walk into the room. Best of all, once the holiday is over, the high-quality basket becomes a functional piece of your home decor. Win, win for you and your loved ones!

Supplies Needed
To keep this project budget-friendly and beautiful, you’ll need:
- A sturdy basket (The foundation of your decor! I used this one, but here are some more.)
- One pool noodle
- Zip ties
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Twine or jute rope (I recommend using twine thicker than mine as it took me quite some time to wrap the pool noodle.)
- Faux flowers (Think romantic peonies, roses, or eucalyptus)
- A small wooden tray (To act as the "swing" seat)
- Tissue paper
- Small Valentine’s Day gifts (Games, socks, candy, pens, etc.)
- A small plush animal (To sit on the swing!)
Step-by-Step Directions
1. Build Your Foundation
Take your pool noodle and bend it into an arc. Place the ends inside the basket against the sides. Use zip ties to secure the noodle to the basket handles or through the weave of the basket. This creates the "frame" for your floral canopy.
2. Add the Rustic Texture
To hide the bright foam of the pool noodle, use your hot glue and twine. Starting at one base, wrap the twine tightly around the entire noodle. This gives it a beautiful, rustic texture that fits perfectly with a farmhouse or cottage-core aesthetic. A pro tip that I shared above…use thicker twine as the thin stuff takes forever to wrap around the pool noodle.
3. Hang the Swing
Cut four equal lengths of twine. Tie them to the corners of your small wooden tray. Bring the strings up to the top center of your pool noodle arc. Knot them securely or use a dab of hot glue to ensure the "swing" hangs level inside the basket. You could also use two pieces of twine like I did; however, this is definitely harder to keep balanced. I also wrapped some of the smaller twine around the pieces of rope I used to give it a cleaner look.
4. Create the Floral "Wow"
Detach your faux flowers from their plastic stems. Since the pool noodle is foam, you can simply push the plastic or wire nubs of the flowers directly into the noodle. Cluster them at the top or trail them down the sides for a lush, botanical look.
5. Fill with Love
Line the bottom of the basket with tissue paper to create volume. Add your main gifts. I love including cozy socks, small card games, heart-shaped candy, and fun stationery. Finally, place a small stuffy on the wooden swing seat to complete the scene!
Versatile Decor for the Win
The best part about this DIY? It isn’t "disposable" decor. Once Valentine’s Day is over, you can easily snip the zip ties and return the basket to your shelves to hold throw blankets, flowers, or magazines. I always save the pool noodle and faux florals for future wreaths or spring garlands, making this an eco-friendly and affordable way to celebrate.
