Sometimes all it takes is seeing someone else style a piece to make you look at it completely differently.
That's exactly what happened when Jamey @jagcagdesign got her hands on Mr. Skeleton’s GINORMOUS Skull with Top Hat Statement Piece.
We already knew this guy was fun. First of all, he really is GINORMOUS. He's not a little skull you tuck onto a shelf between a couple of pumpkins. He's a full-on Halloween statement piece with a top hat, a ton of personality and an open top that makes him surprisingly versatile.
But Jamey took it a step further and showed us three completely different ways to style him for Halloween: as decor, as a candy bucket and as a planter.
And now we're not sure which way we like best.
Three Ways to Style This Oversized Halloween Skull
-
Keep it simple and let him be the statement
-
Fill him with candy for Halloween night
-
Add a plant for a completely unexpected Halloween planter
Let Him Be the Halloween Statement
First up, Jamey showed us that sometimes you really don't need to do much at all.
When a piece is this oversized and unusual, it can carry an entire Halloween moment on its own. Styled alongside a few of your favorite Halloween and fall pieces, Mr. Skeleton instantly becomes the thing your eye goes to.
This is probably how I'd use him for most of October. Place him on a console, hearth, entryway table or covered porch and work him into the Halloween decor you already have.
I especially love the idea of mixing something playful like this with pieces that aren't specifically Halloween—old books, brass candlesticks, pottery, pumpkins and natural branches. It makes everything feel a little more collected and less like it all came from the same Halloween aisle.
And honestly, with that top hat and giant head, he has enough personality without needing much help.
Styling tip: Give an oversized piece like this some breathing room. Surrounding it with a few smaller pieces rather than another large statement piece will help emphasize just how big it really is.
Fill His Head With Halloween Candy
Of course, we couldn't talk about this guy without showing what he was technically made to do.
Jamey filled his head with Halloween candy, and it's such a fun alternative to the usual candy bowl.
Set him by the front door on Halloween night and suddenly your candy bowl is part of your Halloween display. You could surround him with pumpkins and lanterns, add him to a trick-or-treat station or simply let that giant skull greet everyone who comes to the door.
And let's be real—the kids are absolutely going to remember reaching into a giant skeleton's head for their candy.
Once trick-or-treating is over, take the candy out and he's right back to being decor.
Styling tip: You don't have to fill the entire skull with candy. Use some lightweight filler underneath and add individually wrapped candy on top to get that overflowing look without buying enough candy for the entire neighborhood.
Turn His Head Into a Planter
This is the one that got me.
Jamey turned him into a planter, and suddenly this giant Halloween skull had a completely different look.
Adding greenery coming out of the top is just unexpected enough to be fun. For a fall porch, add a mum or ornamental grass and surround him with pumpkins. For something a little moodier, try trailing greenery, wispy grasses, dried stems or branches.
I especially love when some of the greenery spills over the sides. There's something about the contrast of a creepy oversized skull with beautiful, organic greenery that just works.
And you don't necessarily need to actually plant anything inside. Drop a potted plant into the opening or use faux greenery and stems so you can easily change the look whenever you want.
Styling tip: If you're using a real plant, keep it inside its nursery pot or another container rather than planting directly inside the skull. It'll make watering and cleanup much easier.
One Halloween Piece Can Have Three Completely Different Personalities
This is one of the reasons we love working with creators like @jagcagdesign. Give someone creative freedom with a piece and they almost always think of something we hadn't considered.
And this time, Jamey gave us three.
Use Mr. Skeleton as a statement piece for most of October, turn him into a planter when you're decorating the porch, then fill his head with candy when trick-or-treaters arrive.
Or pick your favorite and leave him that way all season.
Because if you're going to find storage space for a GINORMOUS skeleton head for the other eleven months of the year, you might as well get as much fun out of him as possible when Halloween rolls around.
